Easter Day Mama's Face Got Red When She Found Egg in My HeadBy Dolores Stroupe
Mama came in the house last weekend and said, "It looks like Easter outside." I went out and I don't believe I have ever seen the grass as green. The birds were singing and I could feel the warmth of the sun's rays. After such a cold winter, I was glad to say goodbye to winter's gloom and welcome back the tulips, crocuses, dogwood trees, and redbud trees. Two bright red cardinals sat in my dogwood tree looking like a postcard for North Carolina. A big, fat robin sat on the fence singing out a clear, "Wake up." It seemed as if the earth was waking up and the birds were singing their songs of praise. Farmers and gardeners have started to plow their gardens and sow. My, grandfather, Daddy George, always planted his garden on Good Friday.
Easter was always a special time for us. Mama told my sister and me The Legend of the Dogwood describing to us that the white flower symbolized the purity of Christ, and that on the outer edge of each petal there were nail prints brown with rust and stained with red and in the center of the flower there was a crown of thorns. We knew Easter was the time to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
We did traditional Easter things that we loved and that mama made such fun for us. She helped us dye eggs on the Saturday before Easter. Linda and I were very honored that our school janitor who lived down the road asked us to dye his eggs so we had a lot of eggs to play with. We would dip the last egg in all the colors, and called it the "crazy egg."
Our new clothes were pressed and ready on Saturday night before Easter morning. I remember one Saturday night before Easter when my sister, Linda, was in another bedroom and mama and I were in our bedroom. Mama thought Linda said, "Mama I'm turling my hair." Mama replied, "Go ahead, honey." We looked in on Linda and she was standing in the middle of the bed with a pair of scissors. She had said, "Mama I'm tutting my hair." She had cut one side of her hair off and our patient mama sat her down and evened her hair up. Linda's patent leather shoes, our socks trimmed with lace, and our blue taffeta dresses were laid out and we were ready for the next day. I had a headband with flowers and Linda had a little hat. Mama told us we were ready for The Easter parade.
Easter EggsEaster Eggs Hiding and Hunting
We went to church on Easter Sunday and had Easter dinner at Mama Kate's. After dinner the egg hiding and hunting began. My cousins would all get together and we all had so much fun. We fought eggs too. We would cup an egg in our hand and another person would hit the egg with the pointed edge of their egg. The egg that lasted the longest was the winner. One year Michael said he boiled his egg for fifteen hours to make it hard.
I always salvaged a few eggs for some more fun on Monday. I remember one Easter Monday when my childhood friend and cohort in crime, Linda Ann, came down to hide eggs with me. We started out hiding eggs, then we started fighting eggs and the next thing I knew Linda Ann had crumbled an Easter egg in my hair, and to make matters worse she salted it. My sister, Linda's mouth dropped wide open and mama came outside took one look at my head and sent my best buddy and cohort in crime home. She grabbed me and took me inside, laid me on the counter and washed smashed shells, yolks, boiled egg whites, and salt out of my hair. I knew mama was not happy so I was quiet, which was unusual for me. Later, after I had my "speaking to,'' my buddy and cohort in crime was allowed back into our yard. All was well again. Summer was coming and we had lots more to get into.
I hope you and your family have a blessed Easter and make some happy memories.

One of my favorite things about being an Internet Entrepreneur is that I can literally wake up in the morning with an idea for a new product and have it become a reality by the afternoon. Or I can find new ways to promote an existing product. Or I can join a new affiliate program or pursue a joint venture. Every time I repeat this process I create a new stream of income to add to my existing revenue base.
