Golden Retriever Irish Setter Magic
"It's a fine morning for golden retriever learning! And it's a great afternoon for golden retriever learning! A true story about two golden retrievers healing an Irish Setter. Did an ESP dream forecast this? Also pages about Dog Station-Wagon Trauma and Tuesday Wednesday Dogs."
Dog in Trama Golden Retriever Irish Setter MagicGOLDEN RETRIEVER MAGIC
One July night I dreamed of a severed dark-golden-reddish dog leg, lying on the ground. My older retriever Pol, then 11 years old, had legs the approximate size, shape and golden color of the severed leg in my dream. (My other retriever's legs were light-golden in color.) "That age is near the end of a normal golden retriever life-span," the vet had told me two weeks before my dream. With my knowledge of the old Freudian idea (not 100% correct in my opinion) that all dreams are just wish fulfillment, the dream was not easy to tolerate. After much introspection, I really found no wish on my part for either dog to be injured or dead. So I let the matter remain in doubt.
Eight weeks later, while taking my two golden retrievers along the beach for a September ocean swim, a three-legged Irish Setter was headed toward us. The shoulder wound associated with the Irish Setter's missing leg was as might be expected after eight weeks of healing. Also, this Irish Setter was strongly emotionally wounded. He visibly drooped and exhibited a hangdog look that clearly said that life did not seem worth living for him. Surprisingly, my dogs, Pol and Tash, approached the Irish Setter individually and somewhat calmly, instead of making their typical boisterous golden retriever charge toward other canines. Within the space of two minutes of dog-sniffing and circling, it was obvious that the Irish Setter's feelings had changed from "Life-is-not-living" to "Ain't life grand?". The woman with the Irish Setter, whom I had never before met, just said two words to me, "Thank you." We then parted.
So what happened? Some may think it was random chance that I dreamed of a severed dark-golden dog leg about the time of the Irish Setter's accident. On the other hand, the half of this country's population now believing in ESP would be of a different opinion. ESP and precognition, rather than amazing coincidence, seem better explanations for my golden-leg dream at the time of the Irish Setter's accident (two months before we met). To doubters- do you really think my dream was coincidence? To believers- yes, I know I left out talk of the probable agreements between the Irish Setter's owner and myself.
P.S. For another four years our golden retriever household lived happily together without injury to either golden retriever."
It's a fine morning for golden retriever learning!
Golden Retriever Station Wagon TraumaNot So Shaggy Dog Story
Let me use Pol, my then 10-month-old golden retriever, as an example of trauma shock. Pol was a frolicsome high-energy golden retriever without fears, not even of cars or big rigs. Despite my efforts, one day he ran from a warehouse straight into the path of an oncoming station wagon, breaking his leg. He suffered obvious physical pain from the time of the accident until about 24 hours after his first surgery. During that surgery a temporary pin was inserted in his leg. For the next month after the surgery he was the same frolicsome high-spirited golden retriever, and he showed no fears of cars trucks or station wagons! Where was his memory? Then he went into surgery again for the removal of the pin, during which sodium pentothal ("truth serum") was used as an anesthetic. Afterwards, as he was being led down the hall toward me, he was obviously still somewhat under the influence of the anesthesia as he wobbled along drunkenly.
When he saw me, his legs gave way and he collapsed on the floor. His whole body shook fearfully, strongly and almost violently, as I stroked him gently. His eyelids fluttered and his eyeballs moved in the same manner as when he dreamed. After approximately one minute of this shaking, stroking and eye movements, his fear and shaking subsided. He opened his eyes and picked himself up to leave the clinic. Immediately upon opening the outside door, a truck went by noisily, and he was afraid! Great!
But what had happened? My golden retriever's experience directly parallels those of people in automobile crashes. They often lose memory of the crash, also memory of events near in time to the traumatic event. They too will sometimes regain memory when they are ready to face the feelings that were too painful and abundant at the time of the crash. This also happens to those who are doing significant early childhood work in therapy. Their memories of many early events are regained (or expanded in many details as they seemed to be with my golden retriever) as they face the traumas involved.
What is locked up in the shock of trauma (human OR golden retriever)? Words, emotions, sensations and thoughts are four important prisoners incarcerated by partial or complete loss of memory. Freeing any one of these prisoners will help to heal the trauma. The concept of a trauma knot may be useful, a knot in which words, emotions, sensations and thoughts are all intertwining strands within the knot. Depending upon the size and complexity of the knot, loosening one or two strands may or may not completely untie the knot (permanent healing, human OR golden retriever).
Wednesday Dogs Tuesday Golden Retrievers?Personal Experience: Recently I have been sharing a very old dog with a friend. I call Jagger my Tuesday- Wednesday Dog, for he stays with me those two days and returns to his other home the rest of the week.
This is a win-win-win situation for my friend, for myself and for dogs like Jagger. My friend gets some time off, dogs involved get more attention love and excitement; and I get to be a "grandparent" who sends the dog back when I am tired.
This is similar to the idea of taking companion dogs (healing dogs) visiting hospitals and nursing homes. But millions of non-institutionalized folks (mainly elderly but also singles who might have to travel) would enjoy visits by dogs on Tuesday or Saturday or occasionally while the dogs' owners were working.
LOVE HEALS BOTH GIVER & RECEIVER. Would your dog enjoy visiting a elderly relative, neighbor a few hours a week? Could you make that effert?

One of my favorite things about being an Internet Entrepreneur is that I can literally wake up in the morning with an idea for a new product and have it become a reality by the afternoon. Or I can find new ways to promote an existing product. Or I can join a new affiliate program or pursue a joint venture. Every time I repeat this process I create a new stream of income to add to my existing revenue base.
