Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,

In 1897, a little girl wondered if she should believe in Santa Claus. She wrote to the editor of "The New York Sun", asking this very question. The original reply was sans a byline and written by Francis Pharcellus Church, to be published September 21, 1897.

Is There a Santa Claus?
We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor--
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to have men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest mean, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. Santa Claus

Santa Claus arriving through the chimney as a merry old man with red and white clothes. He comes on a sleigh with eight flying reindeer. He is living on or near North Pole. Has given countless children and adults a very merry Christmas He fills socks with presents, and leaves more presents under the tree. St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas

In Greek, Hagos Nikolaos, Bishop of Myra (in the present day Turkey), died about AD 350. Also known as Nicholas of Myra, Santa Claus or Santa in America. Countless Countless of legends (no documents exist) are told about this man within both Western and Eastern Churches. He was born in the city of Patra, and travelled to Palestine and Egypt when young. He was imprisoned during persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian but released later by Emperor Constantine. He attended the first council of Nicaea in 325.
St.Nicholas. St. Nicholas's fame spread rapidly in Middle Ages and thousands of churches are dedicated to him. He has been the patron saint of Russia, Moscow, Greece, children, sailors, prisoners, bakers, pawnbrokers, shopkeepers and wolves. His gift-giving role in Christmas rites probably follows from his fame as the friend of children. The story also tells that he used to give anonymous donations of gold coins to persons in need. His cult spread in Europe and Christmas presents were distributed in December 6th when the pageant of St. Nicholas took place. In many countries this day is still the day of Christmas gift-giving, although there is a mounting pressure everywhere to conform to the international custom of 24th/25th December. The relics of St. Nicholas are in the basilica of St. Nicola, in Bari, Italy (they were stolen from Myra in 1087 AD). For this reason he is sometimes known as St.Nicholas of Bari. Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was America's best political newspaper cartoonist drawing for Harper's Weekly. Once a year he made a special picture for Harper's Christmas issue. These drawings were the basis for his 1890 book "Christmas Drawings for the Human Race". And this book is the foundation of our Santa Claus knowledge. He captured the round-bellied, white-bearded Santa of Clement Moore in his drawings and made him real and living.

Many people seem unable to understand the true diversity and global culture plays a huge part. From Canada. From North Pole. From Korvatunturi. From Greenland. From Someplace Else. Culture wise. Santa Claus, Joulupukki, Babbo Natale, Weihnachtsmann and the rest do have different cultural and historical backgrounds. It would not do justice to them to transfer characteristics from one to the other.
