Labor Day. Come all good workers for the love of Labor Day. The seasons reving up this September.
As a federal holiday in the United states Labor Day is an end the summer celebration. So Happy Labor Day all. With us and with shared time with family and friends, grand parades, and time off of work. There's no place like home for the Holidays.
American Labor Day Holiday The first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributionsworkers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. And a welcome day off work.

As the first official NFL Kickoff game is always played on the first Thursday after Labor Day. We also prepare for that. Just in time we have added below you some great labor day recipies.

LABOR DAY BARBECUES & RECIPIES

We always enjoy the Labor Day picnics and backyard barbecues. Here are some great Labor Day Recipies By Brenda Hyde. Country Style Ribs, Homemade Cornbread, Sweet Coleslaw, Corn on the Cob, Crumb Apple Pie

Country Style Ribs Ingredients: 4 pounds country style ribs
BBQ Sauce-Dad's favorite
salt and pepper to season
1 cup vinegar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
Combine the vinegar, water and spices in a shaker bottle or a bowl (use brushto baste).Cut ribs into 1 rib portions. Place a large piece of foil overthe coals to catch drippings. Place ribs on grill about 6 inches above coals,or gas grill unit. Season with salt and pepper. Close hood and cook for 10minutes. Sprinkle the ribs, turn them, and sprinkle or baste the other side.Repeat this every 10 minutes; closing the hood in between basting. Cook atotal of 50 minutes, then brush on the bottled sauce the last 15 minutesor until the ribs are done. Makes 8 servings.

 

Sweet Cole Slaw Ingredients: 1 large head green cabbage, shredded
2 medium carrots, shredded
1 medium green pepper, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups mayonnaise or salad dressing
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
Optional: one handful of chopped chives or green onions

In a large bowl, toss together the cabbage, carrots and green pepper. Inanother bowl, mix salad dressing, or mayonnaise, sugar and vinegar. Spoonthe dressing over the cabbage mixture. Store, covered, in the refrigerator.Add chives or onions just before serving. Makes 8 cups coleslaw.

 

Homemade Cornbread Ingredients: 3 cups cornmeal
1 cup flour
6 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup milk
1 cup plain yogurt
1/4 cup melted butter or margarine
1/4 cup oil
4 eggs, slightly beaten
2 cups creamed corn

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Butter a 9x13 baking pan. Combine cornmeal,flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in mixing bowl. Combine the milk, yogurt,melted butter, oil and eggs in another bowl. Add to the cornmeal mixture.Stir until just combined. Stir in creamed corn. Pour batter into the greasedpan. Bake for 45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool on rack.Note: You can make this the day before, and store covered.

 

Corn on the Cob
Allow 2 ears per person. Choose fresh green husked corn without blemishes.Put on a large pot of water to boil. Husk the corn and remove silk. Placein pan so it is just covered with water. Cook 3-5 minutes. You can also startwith cold water and cook until water reaches boiling, then remove corn. Servewith butter, salt and pepper. For a special treat mix a stick of butter witha tablespoon of finely chopped chives the night before, so the flavors havetime to develop.

 

Crumb Apple Pie Ingredients:
Crust
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/4 cup ice water

 

Filling:
7 medium Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt

 

Topping:
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/3 cup chilled butter or margarine, cut into pieces

Place rack on lowest position. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. To prepare crust;in a medium bowl mix together flour and salt. Using a pastry blender or 2knives (I also use my fingers) cut shortening into flour mixture until coursecrumbs form. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork, untila dough forms. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for 30minutes. On a floured surface, using a floured rolling pin, roll dough intoa 12 inch circle. Fit into a 9 inch pie plate. Trim dough, leaving a 1 inchoverhang; pinch a decorative edge.

To prepare filling; peel, core and very thinly slice the apples. Mix togetherwith other filling ingredients. Spoon into crust.
For topping, in a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour and cinnamon.Cut butter into mixture until course crumbs form. Sprinkle apple fillingevenly with topping. Bake pie until topping is lightly browned and fillingis bubbly, 35 minutes. If pie is overbrowning, cover loosely with foil. Coolon a wire rack. 8 servings. By Brenda Hyde is a work at home mom.

FIRST AMERICAN LABOR DAY

The first American Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.
"The suggestion came from Peter McGuire who was president of a labor organization and an active worker in another. He felt that "the industrial spirit, the great vital force of the nation" should be honored by having one day set aside for celebration. There was a gala parade followed by picnics and speeches. Two years later Congress passed a bill that made this day a holiday in the District of Columbia and all federal offices. Today it is a legal holiday in every state and territory."

The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

 

Labor Day became official when the U.S. Congress passed a law in 1894 making the first Monday in September a legal holiday. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday. The Central Labor Union urged similarorganizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labororganizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centersof the country.

LABOR DAY: HOW IT CAME ABOUT & WHAT IT MEANS

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtimepresident of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in amore or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess overman, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by onenation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to nosect, race, or nation."

FOUNDER OF LABOR DAY

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance,there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

 

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretaryof the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the AmericanFederation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who fromrude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."

 

But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not goneunchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not PeterMcGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contentionthat Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the InternationalAssociation of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 whileserving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear isthat the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed acommittee to plan a demonstration and picnic. LABOR DAY LEGISLATION Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis toLabor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinancespassed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure statelegislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature,but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. Duringthe year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and NewYork — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the endof the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September ofeach year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. LABOR DAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a streetparade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the tradeand labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for therecreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became thepattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and womenwere introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civicsignificance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the AmericanFederation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day wasadopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspectsof the labor movement.

 

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone achange in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where massdisplays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is morea shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leadingunion officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officialsare given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and television.

 

The vital force of labor added materially to the higheststandard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and hasbrought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic andpolitical democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tributeon Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, andleadership — the American worker.
